REVIVING VITAL AND DEGRADED MARINE ECOSYSTEMSA non-profit dedicated to strengthening the resilience and stewardship of Antigua and Barbuda’s marine ecosystems while fostering meaningful community engagement. Its team of scientists and technicians applies proven restoration methods alongside collaborative management and education to deliver impactful, long-term results. Antigua’s coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds provide essential benefits to both local and global communities, yet these vital ecosystems face increasing threats. The Elkhorn Marine Conservancy welcomes anyone willing to contribute time, resources, or influence toward the restoration of the marine environment. Individuals are encouraged to become members to learn more about current staff initiatives and volunteer opportunities. THE ICONIC ELKHORNElkhorn coral, or Acropora palmata, was once abundant throughout the Caribbean and formed the backbone of reefs along Antigua’s eastern coast, dissipating strong wave activity from the Atlantic and providing complex habitat for fish and invertebrates. Remnants of these reefs exist today in the form of degrading skeletons that have lost most of their structure. Elkhorn coral is emblematic of the keystone species that have been lost, but when restored, can help Antigua’s marine ecosystems thrive again. WHAT WE DOElkhorn Marine Conservancy restores Antigua and Barbuda’s marine ecosystems by growing corals, monitoring coastal habitats, and providing data that guides conservation decisions. Its research supports endangered species and strengthens marine management, while its community programs build local knowledge and inspire sustainable choices that help protect the ocean. Please consider becoming a member and help us safeguard these vital ecosystems. |
