MINISTER PROMISES BETTER 2012 CARNIVAL Monday 26th March 2012
Culture Minister Eleston “Namba” Adams has promised Carnival 2012 will be superior in standard to celebrations in recent years, even as the appointment of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) members is pending Cabinet’s approval.
“The planning for Carnival never ends. Plans are fully underway,” the minister said. “Decisions are being made and it is just for the CDC-appointed committee to be in place. Carnival this year will run from July 28 to August 7 and I can promise you that this Carnival will be better than last year and previous years.”
The minister said he is certain that once an official committee is formed, the group would be “moving in a direction that will be enriching to the festival.” Adams anticipates that within days, an announcement would be made as to whether Cabinet approves the individuals identified to serve on CDC. Despite the fact that the event is merely four months away, the minister said his hopes for success remain high.
Additionally, he said some of the sponsors of the events have contributed to the crunch because selfishness. “We need sponsors who are more open-minded, who would allow others to come forward and contribute to Carnival,” Minister Adams said.
He added, “We have to understand the state of the nation’s finances at this moment. It is not as if the payment is late but the money is there and people are holding on to it and will not pay the performers.”
