CHRISTAL CLASHING SETS NEW FREEDIVING RECORD
Thursday 8th August 2024

On August 4th, 2024, Christal Clashing, one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most accomplished freedivers, etched her name into the history books by setting a new national record at the Deep Dominica Freediving competition. Competing in the Constant Weight (CWT) discipline with a monofin, Clashing reached an impressive depth of 40 meters, surpassing her previous personal best and securing a new record for her country

The Deep Dominica competition, held in the serene and challenging waters off the coast of Dominica, is known for attracting some of the most skilled freedivers from around the region. For Christal Clashing, this year’s competition was more than just a test of physical endurance; it was a culmination of years of dedication, training, and a deep connection to the ocean.

From the outset of the competition, Clashing displayed exceptional form and determination. Her focus was evident as she prepared for her dives, balancing the technical demands of freediving with the mental calm necessary to reach such depths. Each dive she executed was marked by precision and control, as she descended into the deep blue with the aid of her monofin—a technique that requires both strength.

Record-Breaking Dive

The highlight of Clashing's performance came during her record-breaking dive. On August 4th, she descended to a depth of 40 meters in the CWT discipline, setting a new national record for Antigua and Barbuda. This achievement not only showcases her exceptional talent but also places her among the top freedivers in the Caribbean region.

The Constant Weight discipline is particularly challenging as it requires the diver to descend and ascend using the same amount of weight, without dropping or adding any ballast. The monofin technique, which involves the use of a single fin resembling a mermaid’s tail, adds an additional layer of difficulty, requiring precise kicks and a streamlined form to maximize efficiency in the water.

A Champion's Spirit

Clashing’s success in Dominica is a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence. Despite the physical and mental demands of the sport, she has continually pushed her limits, representing Antigua and Barbuda on the international stage. Her achievement at the Deep Dominica competition not only sets a new benchmark for future Antiguan freedivers but also inspires others in the Caribbean to explore the depths of the ocean.

Christal Clashing's performance at the Deep Dominica competition will be remembered as a historic moment for Antigua and Barbuda. As she continues to dive deeper, both literally and figuratively, there is no doubt that she will continue to inspire and achieve new heights in the world of freediving.
